Nepal rocked by three back-to-back earthquakes, five people injured

Nepal was struck by two earthquakes within a period of 26 minutes on Tuesday. The magnitudes of these earthquakes was recorded 4.6 and 6.2 on the Richter Scale respectively. .

The third earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter Scale was felt at 3:45 pm with the epicentre in Bajhang district, according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre.

As a result of the twin earthquakes in Nepal, at least five people have been hospitalised in Bajhang after vehicular movement on major highways was disrupted following a landslide triggered by the quake blocked a highway, the District Police Office said. Tremors were felt in several parts of India, including the national capital Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Among the wounded was a student, who panicked and jumped from a two-story building and sustained injuries in Achham district, sources said. A district police office building in Bajhang district was damaged and several houses developed cracks, according to Nepal’s local administration office.

The 6.2 scale earthquake occurred at 2:51 pm at a depth of 5 km on Tuesday, according to the National Center of Seismology (NCS).

“Earthquake of Magnitude:6.2, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:51:04 IST, Lat: 29.39 & Long: 81.23, Depth: 5 Km ,Location:Nepal,” the NCS said on platform X.

The first earthquake was recorded at 4.6 magnitude at the Richter Scale, the NCS said. It occurred at a depth of 10 km at 2:25 pm.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:4.6, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:25:52 IST, Lat: 29.37 & Long: 81.22, Depth: 10 Km ,Location: Nepal,” the centre tweeted.

There are no reports of casualties from the twin earthquakes as of now. More details are awaited.

Meanwhile, in India’s national capital, the Delhi Police had urged public not to panic. “We hope you all are safe. Please come out of your buildings to a safe spot, but do not panic. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS! For any emergency help, dial 112,” it said in a post on X.

In June, earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR region and parts of north India. According to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, (EMSC), an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred 30km southeast of Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir. The tremors were felt for almost 20 seconds.
