Kathamandu  :  Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has resigned following his defeat in the recent House of Representatives election.

Thapa, who lost the election held on Falgun 21, submitted his resignation to Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma on Wednesday.

He had contested from Sarlahi-4 but was defeated by Dr. Amaresh Kumar Singh of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Following the loss, Thapa met Sharma and expressed his intention to step down.

Thapa had been unanimously elected as party president during a special general convention held prior to the elections. The party is expected to take a decision on his resignation in an upcoming meeting.
