Panama Canal and Greenland should be under US control: Trump

Kathmandu. The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reiterated his desire to take the Panama Canal and the Greenland Islands under American control. Ever since he was elected to the position of President, Trump has been making controversial statements that these two areas should be under the control of the United States because they are extremely important from the point of view of national security.
At a press conference held at his residence ‘Mar a Lago’, Trump did not rule out the possibility of using military or economic force to control these two areas. Both Denmark and Panama have rejected any possibility of handing over their territory to the US. Similarly, Trump has also claimed to use economic force to annex Canada to the US.
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was built by the US and was handed over to Panama in 1999. The two ports at the entrance to the canal are managed by Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings. Trump has been accusing the Chinese military of illegally operating the Panama Canal. About two and a half percent of the global maritime trade is done through the Panama Canal, and this canal is considered important for the US for importing goods from Asia. Greenland is an island located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. It is not an independent country, but an autonomous region of Denmark. Greenland is located on the shortest waterway from North America to Europe and is considered a very important island strategically. Trump says that the US military can keep a good eye on Chinese and Russian ships in the area from this island. 80 percent of this island is covered with about four kilometers of snow all year round, and it is believed to have a large reserve of rare minerals used in the manufacture of batteries and high-tech devices. Meanwhile, Trump’s son Trump Jr. has arrived in Greenland.
