Kathmandu: Save the Children and local partners in the support of European Union and IOM – UN Migration Agency in Nepal
is working to strengthen GCPs at 4 provinces to respond to COVID19 and facilitate safemigration. The suggestion boxes in GCPs help us improve and better support the travelers crossing the GCPs.
Save the Children is speaking with children across the world to hear firsthand how they feel about climate change and inequality and how it’s affecting them in their part of the world. Save the Children aims to speak with 50,000 children as part of this process as part of Generation Hope campaign. In Nepal, we are focused on conducting child hearings on climate justice and economic inequality to reach out to six thousand children through in person and online gathering and online/offline surveys. The hearings will be in Bagmati (including Kathmandu valley), Karnali and Madhesh Provinces.
In Nepal, first in person child hearing was conducted with 20 children in Saptari in which children spoke about flood, migration and their understanding of how climate change is affecting them. “The impact of climate change includes unseasonal rainfall. There is no rainfall when we need it, and it rains when we do not need it. For example, we plant rice in this season but there is no rain and the seeds do not grow at all. And sometimes when the rice plant has already grown and ready to harvest, excess rain destroys the crop. I have witnessed similar incidents in my community many times,” says Suraj (16) one of the participants of child hearing who aspires to be a scientist in the future.
Similarly, we are also running an online survey that has 15 short questions on how the climate crisis and economic inequality are affecting children and their families. The results of this survey will help us to understand what is important for children and young people so that we can best support them to make the changes they want to see.

All we need now is political will.
