South Korea claims that balloons filled with garbage were sent south from North Korea

Seoul, May 27. Local media reported on Wednesday that North Korea sent balloons filled with toilet paper and animal feces to South Korea. Seoul’s military condemned Pyongyang’s despicable act.

South Korean media released widespread images of white balloons filled with garbage and suspicious excrement after North Korea warned it would rain garbage on border areas this weekend in retaliation for Seoul.

“Leaflets and unidentified items that may have been sent for North Korean propaganda have been identified in the Gyeonggi-Gangwon Seam area and are being investigated by the military,” Seoul’s military chief said.

“Citizens are asked to stay away from outdoor activities, avoid contact with any unknown objects and report any such incidents to the nearest military base or police station,” said a statement obtained by South Korean officials.

“These actions by North Korea clearly violate international law and pose a serious threat to the safety of our people,” the statement said. We strongly warn North Korea to immediately stop its inhuman and degrading actions.”

Sometimes the South Koreans also used to release leaflets for anti-Kim Jong-un regime propaganda and balloons containing money for people living on the northern border to the north. Pyongyang has long been angered by such propaganda campaigns in the South, and has previously warned of retaliation, possibly due to concerns that the flow of outside information into a tightly controlled society could pose a threat to the Kim regime.

Vice Defense Minister Kim Kang Il said in a statement on Sunday, “Similar action will be taken in response to repeated leaflets and other littering by the ROK near border areas. Garbage will soon spread across the border and into the interior of South Korea, and it will be a first-hand experience of how much effort is required to remove it.”

The two countries have technically been at war since the armistice that ended the Korean War of 1950-53 ended.
