South Korean President Arrested
Kathmandu, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested. This is the first time that the President has been arrested in South Korea. The Corruption Investigation Office and the police are jointly investigating him in the case of martial law (military law).
Although there were previous attempts to arrest him, the presidential security forces had failed. But now, in the second attempt, he was arrested using more force, according to the BBC. On December 3, President Yol announced martial law. He argued that this step was necessary to protect the country from North Korean communist forces. However, he withdrew his decision within 6 hours after protests from his own party leaders and opposition parties. After this incident, on 14th December, Parliament passed the impeachment resolution against him. The matter is pending before the Constitutional Court. According to South Korean law, the Constitutional Court has the final authority to decide whether to remove him from office after an impeachment.
Officials of the Corruption Investigation Office had asked President Yol to appear three times to inquire about the steps taken by him. However, when he did not appear, they obtained an arrest warrant from the court, saying that it was obstructing the investigation. A large crowd of his supporters gathered to protest the arrest. After his arrest, President Yol claimed that his arrest was illegal. But he said that he accepted the arrest to prevent bloodshed.
