Kathmandu: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in his address to the nation, last night, said he would appoint a new Prime Minister and Cabinet soon. A person who commanded the confidence of the majority of parliamentarians as well as the people would be appointed Prime Minister, he said. He added that the new Prime Minister and the Cabinet could present a plan to bring about stability.
President Rajapaksa also said that he will make room for the abolition of the executive presidency, after discussing with all stakeholders.

He said that action would be taken against those who carried out violence that left nine dead and 300 injured.

In a related development, Sri Lankan Central Bank Govenor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe told media in Colombo yesterday that the Executive President and the MPs must work together to form a stable government that would pave the way for restoring law and order and peace in the country, so that the Central Bank can properly carry out the economic activities. He warned that he would resign as Governor of the Central Bank if elected representatives did not bring in political stability to the country.

If political stability is not achieved as soon as possible, the economic revival would not be achieved only with Central Bank policy actions, he said.
