The number of refugees worldwide has exceeded 122 million

Kathmandu. According to the United Nations High Commissioner (UNHCR), in 2024, the number of refugees worldwide will exceed 122 million.

Peter Ruhenstroth-Bauer, UNHCR’s national director in Germany, described the refugee statistics as alarming. The annual report of UNHCR’s German partner showed that the global refugee population was estimated at 117.4 million in 2023. This increase is mainly due to the civil war in Sudan.

It is mentioned in the statement that more than 18 million people were forced to flee from Sudan after the violence escalated in April 2023. The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Myanmar has contributed to the increase in the number of refugees.

As a result of the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon, more than 1.7 million people have been forcibly displaced.
