Surkhet – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) handed over the Project Information Management System (PIMS) to the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers (OCMCM), Karnali Province, today. PIMS (https://projects.karnali.gov.np/) is a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based database developed with technical support from the European Union Support to Inclusive Federalism (EUSIF) project implemented by UNDP.
The digital platform visualizes the donor-funded projects operating in Karnali Province with information about their geographic location, thematic areas, implementation status and budget size. It will be operated and managed by the Karnali Provincial Planning Commission (KPCC) as per the Project Information Management System Operations Directives, 2023.
The system was designed to assist the government, donors and other stakeholders in evidence-based planning, coordination and policy reform. In addition, the system can help the province government to monitor and strengthen coordination for effective use of existing resources. As of 05 June 2023, there are 54 projects in Karnali, working in 13 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with an approximate budget of USD 145.3 million.
“PIMS systematizes the information related to donor-funded projects in Karnali. It is useful for the government and development partners in setting priorities, and avoiding resource duplication. The province government plans to further strengthen this system to include government-run projects as well,” said Ananda Saru, Secretary, OCMCM.
“Reliable data are critical to inclusive and sustainable development programming. PIMs can be an effective platform to fulfill this need,” said Bernardo Cocco, Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP.
The digital system was developed as part of the ongoing project to support federalism in Karnali. The European Union and UNDP have been supporting the implementation of federalism in Karnali, complementing the Government of Nepal’s (GoN) flagship programme, the Provincial and Local Governance Support Programme (PLGSP), in enhancing inclusiveness, accountability, and sustainability of provincial and local government (PLG) systems and procedures.
