Washington. The United States on Monday announced new export restrictions. The announcement targets China’s ability to make advanced semiconductors as competition deepens between the world’s two largest economies. Semiconductors are used in weapons systems and in artificial intelligence (AI).
“The United States has taken important steps to protect our technology from being used by adversaries in ways that threaten our national security,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement. will be done so that they are not used to undermine our national security.”
The moves tighten existing US restrictions on exports of high-end AI chips to China. The announcement comes just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House. Trump is expected to adopt Washington’s aggressive stance on China.
The latest rule bans exports to 140 companies, including Chinese chip firms Pyotech and SecureCarrier Technologies. The Commerce Department said the new rules also affect chip-making equipment maker Noura Technology Group.
The new rules also include controls on two dozen types of chip-making equipment and three types of software tools for the development or production of semiconductors. “We are constantly talking to our allies and partners, and are re-evaluating and updating our controls,” said Alan Estevez, deputy secretary of industry and security.
These efforts continue a policy that began in Trump’s first term. The goal was to curb Beijing’s ability to gain a leading position in the technology economy. On Monday, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized that President Joe Biden’s administration is particularly tough on “strategically addressing China’s military modernization through export controls.”
“Semiconductor manufacturing equipment governed by today’s regulations is required to produce advanced-node integrated circuits, which are essential for advanced weapon systems and advanced AI used in military applications”, the Ministry of Commerce said. Agency
