Kathmandu – Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize to President Donald Trump in a private meeting at the White House on Thursday. President Trump praised Machado for the gesture.
“Maria is an amazing woman who has endured so much. Maria gave me her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I do,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“This is a wonderful gesture of mutual respect,” Trump said. “Thank you, Maria!”
This was the first time the two leaders met face to face. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was recently taken into custody by U.S. forces in the capital, Caracas. Since then, Venezuela has been governed by acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
Delcy was Venezuela’s vice president under Maduro. Trump has refused to support Machado in Venezuela’s governance, instead siding with Delcy. Machado’s movement claimed victory in Venezuela’s 2024 elections, which were widely disputed, and declared him its new leader. Agency
