Kathmandu- The objective of this day, which was officially celebrated in 2013, is to improve water quality, sustainable management of water resources, and international cooperation and capacity building in water and sanitation.
Stating that building safe and accessible toilets for all is an urgent priority, the United Nations has emphasized that this day should be used as a day to strongly raise the goal of achieving water and sanitation for all.
Noting that 3.4 billion people are still deprived of safe, managed sanitation services and 354 million are still forced to defecate in the open, the United Nations has said that ensuring toilets is essential to achieving the sixth Sustainable Development Goal and protecting women and girls from risks.
Calling for global action on sanitation issues, the world organization has today requested individuals, communities, governments, private sectors, and non-governmental organizations in various countries around the world to conduct activities including community sanitation programs, sanitation classes in schools, public discussions, policy dialogues, and experience sharing.
