India has opened a new consulate building in Shanghai, marking a sign of strengthening economic and people-to-people engagement with China.

The new premises of the Consulate were inaugurated by India’s Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, along with Consul General Pratik Mathur, marking the consulate’s first move in 32 years.

The new office, located in the Dawning Centre in Shanghai’s Changning district, is larger and more modern. It is expected to improve services and strengthen India’s engagement in the region. The Consulate said the move reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development.

Consul Generals from 30 countries and over 500 members of the Indian community attended the opening event. Cultural performances by Indian students, artists, singers, and dancers highlighted India’s soft power.

On the occasion, Pratik Mathur thanked the Indian government and Shanghai authorities for their support. He said the new location is close to major diplomatic, business, and transport hubs. He said it will help the Consulate better serve Indians and Chinese partners. He added that recent initiatives, such as new direct flights between India and Shanghai, are boosting bilateral exchanges, making the upgraded facility especially timely.
