Prime Minister Sushila Karki is in the final stage of stepping down from office, with preparations underway for Balen Shah to assume the post on Friday.
Shah is expected to take the oath of office and formally assume charge on the same day, according to sources.
With only a few days left in office, Karki has stopped attending the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on a regular basis. Sources said she has informally taken leave, indicating she would no longer return to the office.
According to an under-secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, officials had proposed a formal farewell, but Karki declined, expressing her wish to exit in a simple manner.
She has not visited her Singha Durbar office in recent days, and her personal belongings have already been cleared by the secretariat staff.
Meanwhile, most of her family’s belongings have been moved from the official residence in Baluwatar to her private home in Tokha. Preparations have also been underway to arrange the necessary security infrastructure at the new residence.
Karki, who is also a former Chief Justice, will be entitled to security arrangements as a former prime minister. Sources said she is expected to head directly to her Tokha residence after the swearing-in of the new prime minister.
