Trump’s announcement to impose reciprocal tariffs on India

Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he will impose reciprocal taxes on India. Trump said that since India and the US are reciprocal countries, there will be reciprocal tariffs. In a press conference held at the White House after talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump said that the United States will impose the same tariffs as India.

He said that during his first term he had discussed with India the fact that India’s taxes were too high. Trump’s meeting with Modi followed the signing of a presidential memorandum on a fair and reciprocal plan aimed at imposing reciprocal tariffs on US trading partners.
A White House fact sheet on the plan included India’s average applied most-favored-nation tax at 39 percent among examples of unfair trade relations. Ahead of Modi’s visit, India has offered some concessions to ease trade tensions, including a reduction in tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Agency
