United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the drone attacks that targeted the UN peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, Sudan, yesterday.
Six personnel from the Bangladeshi peacekeeping contingent serving in the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei were killed, and eight others were injured. Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan.
Mr Guterres expressed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh and to the families of the fallen peacekeepers, and wished a swift recovery to the injured. In the statement, the UN chief said that attacks targeting UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.
The Sudanese Armed Forces have accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces of carrying out the strike. However, RSF has denied the claim.
